You Need a Budget
Develop a budget.
My wife and I started budgeting when we got married six years ago. It was like walking hand in hand through a magical meadow into the sunset surrounded by unicorns and rainbows.
Not really. Budgeting is like going to the dentist for most people—not fun, and largely avoided.
We tend to think that earning more is the solution to all our financial problems, but that’s not always true. I’ve met with couples making six figures a year that are living paycheck to paycheck. I’ve also met with families making far less that have more than enough.
The difference?
One family is stuck in a reactive cycle—allowing their finances to control them. The other is taking a proactive approach, and they are in control of their finances.
When we started budgeting I found out I was a tightwad. My wife found out she was a spender. I had to loosen up a bit and she had to track her expenditures. It took months to finally get our system down. It wasn’t fun, and sometimes we avoided doing it altogether. But when we put in the work, the result was well worth it—we controlled our money, instead of it controlling us.
