Why I Don’t Work On The Weekends (Sort of)

Define your vision of a successful life.

I’ve been a workaholic my entire adult life.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked my bones to exhaustion. I’m very passionate about projects (financial planning and otherwise) that are put in front of me and always put my best foot forward.

It wasn’t until very recently that I started actively addressing this issue. When I was single and without kids the only person being affected by my unhealthy work habits was myself. When I got married, I told myself I’d still have plenty of time to spend with my wife.

Then came baby #1. And #2. Oh, and guess what? We just had #3.

I’ve had to come to grips with my priorities. In Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” he talks about the true definition of success and invites the reader to imagine they are listening to their own eulogy. “What would you want it to say?” He asks.

That question hit me like a ton of bricks. I want my kids to get the dad they deserve. A father that teaches them godly character and spends time with them. I want my wife to have the husband that she signed up for.

That’s why I no longer work on the weekends… or at least I try my best.

What’s most important to you? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Whom do you really want to bless? What beyond material wealth do you want to leave for the next generation?

Let’s talk about that.
